Dear Parents and Students,
|
It’s hard to believe that we are entering the month of May this week. As we begin our fourth week of learning at home, we just wanted to thank both students and parents for all of their hard work. We know this is a challenging time for everyone, so we appreciate seeing our student’s faces during the weekly Google Meets and parents sending their child’s work for us to see.
We have updated our Learning at Home slides for this week. Please continue send pictures of student work to your teacher’s email. docs.google.com/presentation/d/1xlFQC2jIKcX7VmxTLVxlWmL3pZBe9YQ82N0kxq4A-OE/edit?usp=sharing Here is the link to the printables (printing is optional and only for families who prefer this method): docs.google.com/document/d/10i10KoRBsLQ2spsbkqEWcacmYmEBqq1wvqnphNmc1W4/edit?usp=sharing Each class will be having another Google Meet this Wednesday. The theme is Show and Share. Please choose a special item to share and answer the following questions: What is your item? What do you do with your item? Why is this item special to you? Show and shares are an opportunity for students to work on their presentation skills, as well as their listening skills through being a respectful audience. Please check your email for the link to your class Google Meet. Google Meet Schedule: Mrs. Coulas - Wednesday @ 12:30 pm Ms. Potvin - Wednesday @ 1:00 pm Mrs. Corrigan - Wednesday @ 1:30 pm Ms. Dinardo - Wednesday @ 2:00 pm The work shared in the slides is for all Grade 2 students at St. Martin de Porres. Each child has their own unique strengths and areas of need. Please know that making any needed “accommodations” for your child is encouraged. Accommodations may take many forms, but here are some suggestions: For a child who struggles with reading: If the goal is to practice decoding skills then an accommodation might be for a student to do the reading but do less of it. If the goal is to synthesize information, an accommodation might be to have the information read to a student and then have them synthesize it. For a child who struggles with writing: An accomodation could involve scribing, or “fill in the blank” answers instead of full sentence answers if the goal of the learning is to express knowledge or understanding of a certain topic (for example in a math question or Science question). If the goal of an assignment is to become better at the writing process then an accommodation might involve support with the brainstorming phase, the structure or organization of the writing form (providing a graphic organizer to help organize thoughts), providing a list of words that might be used to support spelling, or to limit the amount written. For students who struggle with math activities: Accommodations might include “`chunking” the amount of work a child sees on a given page, or is required to do on a given page, supporting understanding with objects, a number line, a hundreds chart, or other visuals, limiting the number of questions a child is required to complete, or scribing written answers. Please let us know if you have any questions/concerns. Have a great week! The Grade 2 Teachers

This week, we have made a learning at home schedule. Please click this link to access the slides: https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1xlFQC2jIKcX7VmxTLVxlWmL3pZBe9YQ82N0kxq4A-OE/edit#slide=id.g72b490837f_1_39 The slides have activities for each day of the week (this week is a four day week because of Good Friday). Your child will be learning for about 5 hours each week, which equals to around 1 hour each day. As we've mentioned already, please do the best you can. Your health and safety is still the main priority. Even though it is not required this week, if you would like to share some of your child's work, please take a picture and send it to their teacher's email. As we already mentioned above, each class is planning a Google Meet this Wednesday. You need to have the Google Meet grid extension to be able to see each person in the meet. Here is the link to download this extension: https://t.co/A5vccY8hlU?amp=1 Your teacher will send out a calendar invitation through School Messenger. Just click on the link under Join Hangouts Meet. If you have not used Google Meet yet, it is quite easy to use. At the bottom of the connection page, you will see a mute button to turn your computer microphone on/off and also a camera icon to turn your computer camera on/off. The button in the middle disconnects you from the call. If you disconnect, click on the calendar link again to rejoin the call. We would love to see all of our students join! :) Google Meet Schedule: Mrs. Coulas - Wednesday @ 1:00 pm Ms. Dinardo - Wednesday @ 1:00 pm Mrs. Corrigan - Wednesday @ 1:30 pm Ms. Potvin - Wednesday @ 1:30 pm For interested families, Father Rick from Holy Redeemer Parish is offering virtual masses through his YouTube account. The online videos are a fantastic option for those who wish to attend mass. Here is the link: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCx6eUoeKfkXRlfjv44iJ5bw Please let us know if you have any questions/concerns. We wish everyone a great week and a restful Easter weekend.
